Changing your League of Legends name is free and takes about a minute — but it happens on your Riot account, not inside the game client, which is why so many players can't find it.
The steps
1. Sign in at account.riotgames.com. 2. Open the "Riot ID" tab. 3. Enter a new game name, a new tag, or both. 4. Save. The change applies across every Riot game on your account — League, TFT, and Valorant all share one Riot ID.
What it costs and how often you can change
Riot ID changes are free, with a cooldown between changes (roughly a month). That's a big shift from the old summoner-name system, where a rename cost RP or a large pile of Blue Essence.
What happens to your old name
The moment you rename, your old name#tag combination is released and anyone can claim it. If you might want it back, don't let go of it casually — and if you're hunting someone else's old name, our tracker records when accounts rename, and the checker tells you the instant a combo is free.
Frequently asked questions
Will I lose my friends, rank, or skins?
No. A Riot ID change is purely cosmetic — your account, its PUUID, friends list, rank, and collection are untouched. That's also why trackers like ours can follow players through any number of renames.
Can I keep my name and only change the tag?
Yes — name and tag are edited independently, and changing either one counts as your change for the cooldown period.
Someone took the name I wanted. Now what?
Remember that only the full name#tag has to be unique: pick a different tag and you can usually have the exact name you wanted. Our generator suggests free combos for any name.
