Changing your League of Legends name, your Riot ID, is free, and you can do it once every 90 days. You change it on your Riot account page, and on PC you can also start from the League of Legends or TFT client.
The steps
- Sign in to your Riot account at account.riotgames.com.
- Change your game name, your tag, or both.
- Click Save Changes.
In the League of Legends or TFT client on PC, open the Shop, click the Account button and select the Riot ID Change offer. It takes you to account.riotgames.com to enter your new Riot ID.
Your Riot ID is the same in every Riot game, so the change shows everywhere you play, including TFT and VALORANT.
What it costs and how often you can change
Riot ID changes are free, and there is no paid option: the free change is the only way to change your Riot ID. Once you have used it, the next one becomes available 90 days later.
There is one exception. If you changed your Riot ID in the last 90 days but are facing harassment or other problems because of it, Riot asks you to submit a ticket to Player Support.
When a Riot ID is unavailable or already in use
Only the full name#tag has to be unique, so you can't take a combination another account already holds. Keep the name and choose a different tag, or look a combination up before you try it: Name Checker
Tags start out as a region code such as NA1, EUW or KR, and once you change yours you can't go back to any region code. Riot may say such a tag is already in use, so pick one that isn't a region code.
A game name must be 3 to 16 characters and a tag 3 to 5, and neither can be offensive or inappropriate.
What happens to your old name
The moment you rename, your old name#tag combination is released and anyone can claim it. If you might want it back, don't let go of it casually, and if you're hunting someone else's old name, our tracker records when accounts rename, and the checker tells you the instant a combo is free.
Frequently asked questions
Will I lose my friends, rank, or skins?
No. A Riot ID change is purely cosmetic: your account, its PUUID, friends list, rank, and collection are untouched. That's also why trackers like ours can follow players through any number of renames.
Can I keep my name and only change the tag?
Yes. Name and tag are edited independently, and changing either one counts as your change for the cooldown period.
Someone took the name I wanted. Now what?
Remember that only the full name#tag has to be unique: pick a different tag and you can usually have the exact name you wanted. Our generator suggests free combos for any name.
